The Songleader Teen Fellowship trains and empowers teens to be communal connectors through music. This leadership program teaches students general leadership skills, using music as a powerful bonding agent. Learn how to create meaningful, interactive Jewish connections. Expand your leadership abilities and take your presentation and songleading skills to an entirely new level putting them to good use in a local internship.

–Many teen participants are not musicians or singers and you do NOT need to play an instrument to participate. —

Songleader Teen Fellows are a part of a vibrant community committed to sweetening Jewish experiences for their friends and organizations. Each Fellow is charged with bringing more Jewish music into a Jewish experience of their choice, selecting from a variety of internships in the community or crafting their own.

Fellows will receive professional training at the Songleader Boot Camp (“SLBC”) with Rick Recht , whose annual bootcamp is a National retreat bringing together the most engaging and creative Jewish musicians in the United States. Teen fellows will help their peers discover meaningful connections to Jewish life and the community through music. Hilly Rubin , a young adult local professional songleader, will provide ongoing coaching and mentoring for the fellowship.

Training Opportunity

Peer Leadership Fellows attend the Songleader Boot Camp on 3/31/2019 kicking-off the fellowship by joining a cohort of 10+ Jewish San Diego teens in an immersive leadership training experience. Following-up on that experience, Fellows will meet with Hillel Rubin, the fellowship mentor to refine their plans to be used on site during their internship, to share ideas with their peers, and to continue to refine their skills learned in SLBC. There will be three meetings after SLBC between April – June, 2019. (Likely Sundays to be finalized together with the teens in the cohort.)

Internship

Each Fellow will be sweetening a Jewish experience in various Jewish organizations and institutions in San Diego. They will work with an assigned site contact. Internships will be completed on site between April – June, 2019 as determined by internship hosts. The Jewish songleading the teens do will help Jewish educators and leadership at their host site create impactful Jewish learning experiences for their organizations.

Program Stipend & Eligibility

Teen Songleader Fellows will receive a $100 stipend, which allows high school students to choose this not simply as a volunteer opportunity, but rather as a job with accountability, resume prestige, training and goals. High school students currently in grades 9-11 may apply.

Craig Parks, San Diego Songleader and faculty member of Songleader Boot Camp

Hannah Green, UC Santa Barbara student from San Diego who attended SLBC and shares her perspective on how it inspired her and led her to songlead at Hillel at her University
